From low-powered electric scooters to <a href=\"https:\/\/damon.com\/hypersport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">electric superbikes<\/a>, there\u2019s something for everyone.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this amount of choice can cause confusion when it comes to buying your first electric motorcycle, especially knowing what kind of license you\u2019ll need.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, we\u2019re answering all of the FAQs that we\u2019ve received about electric motorcycle licenses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do You Need a License to Drive an Electric Motorcycle?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, you do. You need a motorcycle license to ride any electric motorcycle. However, the same does not apply to electric bikes.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Electric bikes don\u2019t require a license. However, the laws around them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peopleforbikes.org\/electric-bikes\/state-laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vary from state-to-state<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s the difference between e-bikes and electric motorcycles?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Electric bikes operate like a traditional pushbike, with an electric motor providing you with assistance. With electric motorcycles, there\u2019s no pedaling. All the movement is controlled by the throttle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While you don\u2019t need a special license for e-bikes, a motorcycle license permits you to operate a two-wheeled motorcycle. However, this does not include a car, a three-wheeled motorcycle, or any other type of vehicle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, the license you have for your car does not give you the legal right to ride a motorcycle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Kind of License Do You Need for an Electric Motorcycle?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two classes of motorcycle licenses in the states, Class M1 and Class M2. The class of license you need depends on your bike\u2019s specifications and type.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do these differ? Let\u2019s take a look:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Class M1 License &#8211; <\/strong>This allows you to drive any type of electric motorcycle. This includes electric motorcycles with a hp equivalent of over 150cc, electric mopeds, and electric scooters.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Class M2 License &#8211;<\/strong> This is more restrictive. A Class M2 license allows you to operate a moped (a motorcycle with pedals) or any motorized bicycle that doesn\u2019t exceed 30 mph.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Class C License &#8211;<\/strong> This class of license is usually for cars. However, you\u2019ll need a Class C license if your electric motorcycle has a sidecar attached or has three wheels. &nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With this in mind, we recommend getting a Class M1 license. That means:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>You\u2019re 15 to 16 years old (depending on your state)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Passed a vision test&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have held a valid driving license for at least 6 months&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The next step is to take a DMV-approved rider training course. This teaches you how to operate a motorcycle. Once you complete the course, you\u2019ll receive a certificate that allows you to take the DMV\u2019s practical and written exams. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After you pass both &#8211; we\u2019re assuming you do &#8211; you\u2019ll be issued your motorcycle license! Or, as we like to call it, your ticket to a good time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the Next Steps After Getting Your Motorcycle License?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The next step is to buy an electric motorcycle! However, we\u2019re going to assume that\u2019s obvious and you\u2019ve got a sweet two-wheeler you\u2019re dying to ride.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After getting your motorcycle license, you\u2019ll need to get <a href=\"https:\/\/damon.com\/blog\/how-insure-motorcycle-usa-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">electric motorcycle insurance<\/a> and then complete your electric motorcycle registration at the DMV. These are both super important. If you don\u2019t complete all of these steps, you\u2019re breaking the law and endangering yourself and others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/motorcycle-registration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">get your electric motorcycle registered<\/a> will differ slightly depending on your state. Furthermore, until you\u2019re 21 or older, you can\u2019t qualify for an M1 or M2 license without completing an approved motorcycle safety training program. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you\u2019re in Texas, Illinois, Florida, or anywhere else, these little quirks and differentials are common throughout the country.
