{"id":2860,"date":"2023-01-04T07:12:01","date_gmt":"2023-01-04T15:12:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/damon.com\/blog\/?p=2860"},"modified":"2023-01-04T07:12:07","modified_gmt":"2023-01-04T15:12:07","slug":"the-dos-and-donts-cleaning-motorcycle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/damon.com\/blog\/the-dos-and-donts-cleaning-motorcycle\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Wash a Motorcycle: The Dos and Absolutely Don\u2019ts of Cleaning a Motorcycle&nbsp;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Whether you ride an <a href=\"https:\/\/damon.com\/blog\/electric-motorcycle-vs-gas-motorcycle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">electric motorcycle or a gas motorcycle<\/a>, one thing remains the same: your bike is going to get dirty.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, while you\u2019ve likely got an idea of how to wash a motorcycle, we all need a reminder from time to time on how to get your bike gleaming again.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that in mind, we\u2019ve put together a list of dos and don\u2019ts for cleaning a motorcycle. Follow these and washing your motorcycle will be as enjoyable as riding it &#8211; almost.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DO&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Use Two Buckets of Water&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to clean a motorcycle is with two buckets of water.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While you\u2019re cleaning, the grime collected on your bike tends to end up on your microfiber cloth. As a result, the dirt will mix with the water and back onto the cloth as you rinse and wring out the cloth. If you do this in one bucket, you\u2019ll just be applying that same grime straight back onto your bike. Pointless.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, you should use two different buckets when washing a motorcycle:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Bucket 1 is filled with water and motorcycle shampoo&nbsp;<\/li><li>Bucket 2 is filled with pure water&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When you need to get the dirt off your cloth, rinse it in the bucket of clean water before dipping it back into the bucket with the cleaning mixture.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>PRO TIP: Microfiber cloths are the <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>best thing to clean a motorcycle<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>! Their softness reduces the chance of leaving scratches on the paintwork and they absorb water extremely effectively \u2013 making drying your motorcycle quicker and easier.<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Wash Your Bike in the Shade&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Washing your motorcycle in the sun gives you the chance to show off your two-wheeled wonder to a passerby. However, it\u2019s not the best practice for cleaning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soap and sun do not mix. The sun will just dry the soap up too quickly. However, although it\u2019s not in a rider&#8217;s nature, it\u2019s best to slow down.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rushing could lead to several things:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Damaging your bike\u2019s paint job&nbsp;<\/li><li>Doing a bad job \u2013 if you don\u2019t clean off harmful road deposits like salt and grit, you\u2019re just wasting your time&nbsp;<\/li><li>Damaging your motorcycle\u2019s components and fixtures&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can know, cleaning a motorcycle is not just for superficial reasons, it\u2019s an essential part of motorcycle maintenance! Therefore, we advise you to take your time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Lube the Chain\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you wash your motorcycle, you obviously want to get rid of grease and grime. That being said, there\u2019s one area of your bike you want grease to remain: your chain.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that in mind, don\u2019t forget to re-lube your entire chain after you\u2019ve washed and dried off your two-wheeled friend.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Apply Wax to Your Motorcycle&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Want to add some extra luster? Moreover, cleaning products not specifically designed to clean motorcycles may contain harsh chemicals that could damage your bike\u2019s paint job and components.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Play it safe and stick to using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/roadshow\/news\/best-motorcycle-cleaner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">motorcycle shampoo<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u2019t Wash Your Gas Bike Straight After a Ride&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your bike is stupidly filthy after a ride, you might be tempted to clean it right away. While an admirable mindset, it\u2019s not a good idea for ICE motorcycles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to give gas engines enough time to cool down properly. The engine and other metal components, such as the carburetor, are subjected to a significant amount of heat on the road. You\u2019re likely to burn yourself if you get cleaning right away. In addition, splashing a recently-heated gas motorcycle with cold water may lead to cracking due to the sudden change in temperature.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With electric motorcycles, it\u2019s a little different.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no need to let things cool down. This is because temperature levels are much lower than on an ICE bike. For example, all <a href=\"https:\/\/damon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Damon motorcycles<\/a> come with a liquid-cooled electric motor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, you could theoretically ride through Death Valley, get home, and wash your motorcycle right away. That\u2019s expected. However, what\u2019s not expected is how difficult they can be to clean off!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approach cleaning bugs off with caution and calm. If you scrub too aggressively, you run the risk of damaging your bike\u2019s paint job. The best thing to do is try to loosen bugs off first. We recommend using hot water or spraying on bug remover. Then, they should come off much easier.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t let them bug you! *Tumbleweed&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u2019t Use a Pressure Washer&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are corners of the internet that say you can use a pressure washer to clean your motorcycle. With that being said, we still think it\u2019s best to err on the side of caution and avoid it.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a couple of reasons for this:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>If you get too close, you can really damage the components of your bike&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\"><li>It gets deep dirt off quickly, but you\u2019ll do a more thorough job with a cloth&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, when spraying down your bike, stick to the trusty garden hose. In particular, a hose which you can adjust the pressure on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bear in mind, if you\u2019re washing a gas motorcycle, you need to plug up your exhaust pipe before doing so and take care of the intake and electrical system. Furthermore, our bikes are designed and tested to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trentonsystems.com\/blog\/ip67-rating\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an IP67 rating<\/a>. This means they are very resistant to water getting into the wrong places.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>PRO TIP: Don\u2019t take your motorcycle to a car wash! It could have the same effect as a pressure washer \u2013 only worse.<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Head Out for a Ride!&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Followed all the dos and don\u2019ts of motorcycle cleaning? Got yourself a glistening motorcycle?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s time to reward yourself and head out for a ride!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How often you wash your motorcycle is up to you. The rule of thumb is every two weeks. However, there are some that do it every week and some \u2013 even some who work at Damon \u2013who rarely wash their motorcycle.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It depends on where you live and your preference.
